Will an Embroidery Machine do heavy duty sewing?

I am thinking of buying a embroidery machine (Bernina Deco 500) Does anyone know if it can do some canvas sewing?

I have a Bernina from the 70′s and it can sew through anything with no problem. I have done leather upholstery for my kitchen chairs down to lingerie. It is a workhorse but I know nothing about Embroidery Machines. Here is a link that may help.
