Raccoons and my garden?

I am putting in my vegetable garden this weekend, through the week…I also have a current issue with raccoons (buying a live trap today). But there is a problem in the area I live in with these critters and I am wondering what I should expect with my garden. Will they eat the veggies? And if so, while I continue to try and trap them, is there anything that I should be doing for my garden to protect it?

Raccoons will eat pretty much anything. Veggies aren’t really their preferred food but they will eat them if they can’t find anything else. The best way is probably to build a fence around your garden (it has to be a good one because they are quite persistent and good climbers). Raccoons hate cayenne pepper and you could sprinkle some of that on your garden. A good snort of that should discourage them. There are also these motion-detecting sprinklers that when they detect an animal they make sound and squirt a good blast of water. Raccoons are smart and will remember places where they’ve had unpleasant or unsuccessful excursions while foraging and will often avoid those places in the future.
