Need advise on this new computer i just purchased?

im going to remove microsoft works and install openoffice but i need help on which antivirus i should install i have nod32 smart security but its for xp will it work or should i get a new antivirus. ALSO a strong firewall OR should i just install linux and which one

With the specs you are describing, I wouldn’t worry about uninstalling MS Works. Just install OpenOffice and let it overwrite the file associations. That way if you run into a project that might be easier to do in Works, it is still there.

As far as the anti-virus goes, unless it says specifically that it is compatible with vista, most features will probably work, but I can almost guarantee you that some features will not. I’d just go ahead and by a new one. As far as a firewall goes, I don’t really use one. The one included with vista should be sufficient if you make sure the configuration is setup right.
