Hoop Magnetic
Physics: Induction and inductance?
A copper ring is held in an east-west plane in a uniform magnetic field whose field lines run along the south-north direction. Most induced emf is produced when the ring is: A) rotate around a north-south B) turn around an east-west C) moved quickly, without rotation, east D) moved quickly, without rotation, to the south E) moved quickly, without rotation, to the northwest The answer key says B. Can someone please explain why. Thank you.
(B) is the only situation in which an emf is induced at all. In all other situations, the ring is held perpendicular to the field. Since the field is uniform, the only way to induce a change in the magnetic flux is changing the angle between ring and field. Only B does this, so only B induces an emf.
