Federalist Society hosts speakers in October

By Mark Kapocius

Justice Diane Sykes of the Wisconsin Supreme Court spoke to a standing-room only crowd of students on October 9th. Sykes, President Bush's nominee for the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, addressed issues in state court judicial selection in a speech entitled "The Federalist No. 78 and State Court Judicial Selection: Balancing Independence and Accountability."

After her speech, Justice Sykes answered student questions on the politicization of the federal court selection and nomination process, state judicial election process, and making politically unpopular, but legally accurate, decisions. Dean Kearney introduced Justice Sykes, and applauded Sykes' recommendation for the dean of the Law School, jokingly referring to Sykes' role in the process of naming Kearney to his current position.
