Hand embroidering on an Irish linen handkerchief – tips?
I am hand embroidering monograms on some vintage Irish linen handkerchiefs and I made a mess of the first one. The fabric is so delicate it is pulling the threads together and leaving gaps at the edges of the design. I have switched to a smaller needle and finer thread, but should I use a stabilizer? And if so, what kind? Thanks for your help
Yes I am working in a hoop and yes I am doing this by hand. Yes I know how to embroider and tat, but I like the tiny rolled hems on these just like they are. I have embroidered cotton handkerchiefs in the past, I just never tried linen.
are you doing this on a machine or by hand ? let me know and I will try to help you out.
you only use a stabilizer when you are working on a machine not by hand if you were to use any sort of backing to it unless it was a washable stabilizer you will have a bulky embroidery and on a handkerchief this doesn’t look very nice .
