Winter Wonderland
There is nothing more beautiful than the snowflakes drifting from the sky, shake the landscape with a new layer of snow though icicles Bright are also superb. However, it is difficult to appreciate the beauty of a winter when electricity and pipes are frozen! recent storms winter have affected States ranging from Oregon to Kentucky to Pennsylvania.
A deadly ice storm hit the southern states to bear the brunt Kentucky of the damage. This ice storm blamed for at least 40 deaths in nine states. Power was knocked out throughout the Southeast with 1.3 million customers who have lost power. In Kentucky, more than 700,000 people lost their power. National Guard units were mobilized to distribute food and water, clear debris, reaching residents in areas severely affected, and provide security.
Due to lack of power, many residents have resorted to other means to keep warm. Unfortunately, deaths have been linked to the misuse of charcoal grills – they should never be used indoors – and many residents have died from monoxide poisoning carbon.
The governor of Kentucky, Gov. Steve Beshear, referred to this deadly winter storm as one of the worst natural disasters to strike Kentucky. The damage caused by the winter storm is widespread with fallen trees, downed power lines, frozen pipes, and localized flooding.
In other areas, the storms of last winter caused similar damage, to a lesser extent than in Kentucky. For example, in Salem, Oregon, teams cleaning are busy dealing with damaged trees found throughout the city. A series of snow, ice and winter storms hit Oregon recently, causing significant damage. The removal of trees and the winter storms damage cleanup operation in Salem is expected to take several months.
Storms winter cause large amounts of damage each year. In the decades spanning 1986-2006, the Insurance Information Network of California estimates that the nation $ 23,100,000,000 suffered in winter storm damage. An additional $ 9.3 billion in damages occur due to hail, wind and flood damage.
Preparing for Winter Storms
Not only winter storms can cause widespread damage and knock out power for weeks while also isolating residents. fallen trees and power lines blocked the main roads, making it impossible to travel far. You can be "locked by snow for many days before help arrives. While it is too late to prepare for the recent storms that have been isolated from residents in all states, it's never too late to prepare for future winter storms.
Create an emergency kit – This kit should contain emergency supplies such as flashlights, batteries, portable radio, candles, water and nonperishable food. Make sure you have enough food and water for your family to survive for at least 72 hours.
A sure way to keep warm – If the power goes out, how will you keep warm? Do you have a fireplace? Does a stash of dry wood? Will you need a portable generator and heaters? Know how to use these items safely? Now is the time to learn where to install generators and adequate ventilation to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
Pipe insulation – Insulate your pipes before the next winter storm. During freezing temperatures, leave your taps dripping slightly in order to keep the water flowing and prevent freezing.
Fill your bathtub – Because the water can escape during the winter storm, not a bad idea to fill your bathtub with water. You can use this water throughout the disaster, as needed.
Winter is a beautiful season with its share of difficulties. While some winters can be mild, it is wise to be prepared for possibility of another brutal ice storm.
